Scientists at the DARPA in Arlington, Va., are asking engineers at the Raytheon Co. Missile Systems segment in Tucson, Ariz.
to come up with a preliminary design for launching unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and
unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) from the Navy carrier-based F/A-18 Hornet fighter-bomber.

The idea is to use attachments on the underside of the F/A-18
where auxiliary fuel tanks normally go.

This approach, if successful, would give Navy commanders a fast and long-range capability
to deploy unmanned surveillance aircraft and submersibles when time is of the essence.

DARPA awarded a $284,640 study contract to Raytheon Missile Systems earlier
to focus on a preliminary design for a base station for UAVs and UUVs on an F/A-18 fuel tank underwing hard point

Johns Hopkins researchers set new distance record for Drone Transport
ξ Medical samples transported 160+ miles by unmanned aircraft under temperature control in Arizona desert

ξ aircraft was controlled via a radio link between the onboard flight computer and the ground control station
ξ flight was performed in restricted airspace at an unpopulated military aircraft test range,
ξ cleared of other air traffic
ξ Samples were packed and transported according to IATA guidelines

ξ During transport, samples were in a temperature controlled chamber designed by the Hopkins team
ξ chamber uses electrical power from the aircraft to maintain the samples at room temperature during warm or cold weather
ξ device is lighter than an equivalent amount of ice, the current method of temperature control
ξ chamber can warm the samples in cold weather

ξ following the flight, all samples were transported to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona
ξ Each pair of samples was compared to check for differences between the flown and not-flown sample
ξ Results from sample pairs were similar for 17 of the 19 tests
ξ Small differences were seen in Glucose and Potassium, which do also vary in other transport methods
ξ differences seen in this test arose because the samples not-flown by drone
ξ were not as carefully temperature controlled as the flown samples in the temperature-controlled chamber

ξ It has a unique �quadplane� hybrid configuration

ξ make a transition to traditional horizontal flight
ξ aircraft is uniquely suited to operate at medical facilities

ξ fly efficiently between widely separated facilities

ξ The Johns Hopkins team previously studied the impact of drone transportation on the chemical,
ξ hematological, and microbial makeup of drone-flown blood samples and
ξ found that none were negatively affected

ξ Previous studies involved drone flight distances up to approximately 20 miles
ξ the new study examines the effects of drone transportation over longer distances,
ξ more than 160 miles, and significantly longer time periods that require environmental controls
ξ The team plans further and larger studies in the U.S. and overseas.

ξ �My vision is that we engage drone technology to fly over challenges presented by self-limiting ground transportation systems,� says Amukele.
ξ �So, our hospitals will have diagnostic results far more quickly.
ξ And, when a first responder arrives to the scene of an accident,
ξ he or she will be met by a medical delivery drone carrying the correct blood product.

I'm just not sure how far this FAA group is going,
people seem to be losing confidence in them.
They want to work with governments
but small businesses seem to be an afterthought.
