5. Safety and security of nuclear power
ξ More than half of EU Member States use nuclear power
ξ it provides on average around 15% of energy and
ξ one third of all electricity in the EU
ξ The decision whether to use nuclear power or not is for Member States.
ξ But the EU, under the EURATOM Treaty, has a role in ensuring that nuclear power is used in a safe and secure way.
ξ Therefore we aim to achieve the highest standards of safety, security and non-proliferation
ξ in the nuclear sector and to continue to ensure that such high standards are observed internationally.

ξ "Nuclear energy makes an important contribution to our fight against climate change and our security of energy supply,"
ξ Piebalgs told a conference of the European Nuclear Assembly in Brussels.
ξ However he added that "we need to strengthen the cooperation between EU member states on the issues related to the safety and security of nuclear installations and the treatment of nuclear waste".
