»Beijing Olympics and Culture

Beijing Olympics, Chinese Style
ξ how to make this Olympics unforgettable and enrich it with Chinese characteristics
ξ “Brilliant Chinese traditional culture combining with Olympic culture will highlight the Beijing Olympic Games.”
ξ said Jiang Xiaoyu, the Executive vice-president of Beijing Olympic Games

ξ We should have a new expression for the Humanistic Olympics
ξ When a nation hosts the Olympics it always tries to present its traditional culture to the world, and
ξ the idea of Humanistic Olympics is put forward by China
ξ A modest and objective attitude is needed in expressing the Humanistic Olympics,
ξ according to Liang Xiaosheng, a famous writer from China
ξ Liang said, it is not so important that how many cultural and artistic works will capture the eyes of foreign athletes, journalists and visitors,
ξ the important thing is our Chinese will express the friendly and peaceful wishes to the world through such cultural elements

Harmony
ξ is a quintessence of Confucianism
ξ is in common with Olympic culture
ξ The premise of fulfilling harmony is mutual understanding
ξ that depends on getting to know each other
ξ It is unreasonable to judge foreigners’ attitude toward China only by their words and behaviors
ξ If we want to win their friendship, mutual understanding is the key

Beijing Olympics, Chinese Style
ξ In the opinion of Zhang Wu, designer of the Chinese seal,
ξ the Chinese seal fully expresses the connection between the traditional Chinese culture and Olympic culture.
ξ The Olympic culture emphasizes speed, power, and peaceful competition.
ξ In the Chinese seal, the dragon figure is concealed within the lines, and
ξ the dragon, to some extent, is an embodiment of hero worship.
ξ The figure of the Chinese seal is a dancing person expressing a happy theme, which coincides with the Olympic spirit;
ξ in the Olympic Games, happiness is more important than competition itself.

Oriental culture has always been appealing to westerners, including Chinese folding fans, lanterns, cheongsams and blue and white porcelains,
but the most impressive thing is our spirit, customs and cultures, and not these material things.

As our society develops, the quintessence of traditional Chinese culture has been undermined.
The Olympics is a good chance to revive and develop our traditional culture.
During the Beijing Olympic Games, China has two traditional festivals,
the Chinese Valentine's Day (Double Seventh Festival or Qi Xi Jie) and
Mid-Autumn Festival
We will organize a series of activities including chanting poems and appreciating the moon,
which provide an opportunity for Chinese and foreigners alike to enjoy traditional Chinese culture together.

yourDragonXi ~ Qi Xi Jie

»Qi Xi Jie
ξ Festival of Qi Xi Jie, China is also known as the Valentine's Day of China
ξ The festival is celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of Chinese calendar
ξ Domestic arts like melon carving, is demonstrated by young girls on this day.
ξ Offerings, consisting of fruit, flowers, tea, and facial powder, are presented to Niulang and Zhinü
ξ either by a single woman or a newly wedded lady of the house.

Romantic Legend
ξ The legend has been handed down for nearly 2 millennia.
ξ The story has been recorded as far back as the Jin Dynasty (256-420 AD).
ξ Poets composed hundreds of verses on the love story and many types of Chinese opera tell the story.
ξ The Chinese people believe that the star Vega, east of the Milky Way, is Zhi Nu and,
ξ at the constellation of Aquila, on the western side of the Milky Way, Niu Lang waits for his wife.

ξ Zhi Nu was said to be the youngest of seven daughters of the Queen of Heaven.
ξ With her sisters, she worked hard to weave beautiful clouds in the sky,
ξ while Niu Lang was a poor orphan cowherd, driven out of his home by his elder brother and his cruel wife.

ξ Niu Lang lamented over his lonely and poor life with an old cow, his only friend and companion.
ξ The magical cow kindly told him of a way to find a beautiful and nice woman as his life companion.
ξ Under the direction of the cow, Niu Lang went to the riverside on an evening,
ξ where the seven fairies slipped out of their heavenly palace to bathe.

ξ He took one of the beautiful silk dresses the fairies had left on the bank.
ξ When the fairies left the water, the youngest couldn't find her clothes and
ξ had to see her sisters fly back to heaven without her.

ξ Then Niu Lang came out with the dress and asked the youngest fairy, Zhi Nu, to stay with him.
ξ Several years passed on Earth, which were only a few days in heaven.
ξ Niu Lang and Zhi Nu lived happily together and had two children before the Queen of Heaven discovered Zhi Nu's absence.

ξ She was so annoyed she had Zhi Nu brought back to heaven.
ξ Seeing his beloved wife flying in the sky, Niu Lang was terrified.
ξ He caught sight of the cowhide hanging on a wall.
ξ The magical cow had told him before dying of old age: "Keep the cowhide for emergency use."

ξ Putting the cowhide on, he went after his wife with his two children.
ξ With the help of the cowhide, Niu Lang was able to follow Zhi Nu into heaven.
ξ He was about to reach his wife when the Queen showed up and pulled off her hairpin to draw a line between the two.
ξ The line became the Silver River in heaven, or the Milky Way.

ξ Zhi Nu went back to the heavenly workshop, going on weaving the clouds.
ξ But she was so sad, and missed her husband across the Silver River so much that the clouds she weaved seemed sad.
ξ Finally, the Queen showed a little mercy, allowing the couple to meet once every year on the Silver River.

Fairy Of The Magpie Bridge

Among the beautiful clouds,

Over the heavenly river,

Crosses the weaving maiden.

A night of rendezvous,

Across the autumn sky,

Surpasses joy on earth.

Moments of tender love and dream,

So sad to leave the magpie bridge.

Eternal love between us two,

Shall withstand the time apart.

History, Version 1/1
ξ Niulang, the star Altair, was a young cowherd, who came across seven fairy sisters bathing in a lake.
ξ He along with his ox steals their cloths.
ξ Zhinü, the star Vega, who is the youngest sister, is sent to look for their clothes.
ξ While looking for their clothes she comes in front of Niulang in bare body and has to agree to marry him.
ξ They prove to be a great couple after marriage and stays happily, but destiny has something else stored for them.
ξ Goddess of Heaven after finding a mere mortal married to a fairy,
ξ scratches a wide river in the sky with her hairpin to separate them.
ξ This river is known as the Milky Way, which separates the two stars Altair and Vega.
ξ Zhinü sits beside the river and keeps sobbing and Niulang takes care of their two children on the other side of the river.
ξ Seeing this, the Goddess of Heaven out of pity, let them see each other for one night every year.
ξ This night is celebrated as the Festival of Qi Xi Jie or the Valentine's Day in China.

History, Version 1/2
ξ The seven daughters of the Goddess of Heaven caught the eye of a Cowherd during one of their visits to earth.
ξ The daughters were bathing in a river and the Cowherd, Niu Lang, decided to have a bit of fun by running off with their clothing.
ξ It fell upon the prettiest daughter (who happened to be the seventh born), to ask him to return their clothes.
ξ Since Niu Lang had seen the daughter, Zhi Nu, naked, they had to be married.
ξ The couple lived happily for several years.
ξ Eventually however, the Goddess of Heaven became fed up with her daughter's absence, and ordered her to return to heaven.
ξ However, the mother took pity on the couple and allowed them to be reunited once a year.
ξ Legend has it that on the seventh night of the seventh moon,
ξ magpies form a bridge with their wings for Zhi Nu to cross to meet her husband

History, version 2
ξ Niu Lang and Zhi Nu were fairies living on opposite sides of the Milky Way.
ξ Feeling sorry for the two lonely sprites, the Jade Emperor of Heaven actively tried to bring them together.
ξ Unfortunately, he succeeded too well - Niu Lang and Zhi Nu became so enraptured with each other that they neglected their work.
ξ Annoyed, the Jade Emperor decreed that from that point on, the couple could only meet once a year
ξ - on the seventh night of the seventh moon
ξ And so today, star gazers celebrate Qi Qiao Jie by gazing up at the star Vega, east of the Milky Way
ξ which represents Zhi Nu, and at the constellation Aquila, on the west side of the Milky Way,
ξ where Niu Lang waits for his lover to join him.

yourDragonXi ~ Qi Xi Jie Translation

»Qi

Foreword
ξ qi has entered Western consciousness because of increased familiarity with traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, herbs and qigong
ξ nearly everybody now knows or has heard of the word qi, but its actual meaning remains a mystery for most Westerners
ξ sometimes my answer is: "qi = x or qi = ?", because in Chinese qi means 'invisible' or 'the indication of something unknown'
ξ the Chinese distinguish different kinds of qi, each having a different meaning,
ξ therefore in books the meaning of qi can vary from page to page or even from line to line

ξ Today the tendency is for people to contract qi into one concept and thus mix a lot of different ideas,
ξ resulting in the loss of accurate meaning.

ξ For those who really wish to study the meaning of qi, I would suggest the research of Chinese books that write about qi.
ξ However for most people this is impossible.

The word 'Qi'
ξ the Chinese word is expressed in the West by 'Qi', 'Chi', or 'Ki'
ξ The first version is based on the Chinese alphabet,
ξ the second is the way it is pronounced in Chinese, and
ξ the third is the Japanese pronunciation.
ξ here will use 'qi'
ξ With the increasing popularity in the West of acupuncture, massage, herbal medicine and Taijiquan,
ξ the word has come into common use, normally with the sense 'vital energy'
ξ But in fact 'qi' has many meanings in Chinese, because China is a vast country with an immensely long history.
ξ As a current Chinese-English dictionary says,
ξ 'the concept of qi can be found in different scientific disciplines such as meteorology, medicine, philosophy and others'.

In periods the basic elements of the qi character varied, but one symbol never changed:
the symbol whose trace can be found in every calligraphic expression of the qi concept, namely the symbol for "vapour".

yourDragonXi ~ Jie

»Jie
ξ In Chinese, sister could refer to younger sister mei or elder sister jie.
ξ The symbol for elder sister jie also has the girl radical but on the right it has a component which looks like a stool with two rungs standing on the ground.
