»Paris airport to go green with geothermal energy
ξ Orly Airport, one of the two big airports serving Paris, is to extract geothermal energy from deep underground to slash its heating bills,
ξ Two shafts each 1,700 metres (one mile) deep will be drilled on the airport's perimeter to access a water table warmed by heat emanating from the Earth's hot core.
ξ Drawn upwards by natural pressure,
ξ the water will emerge at the surface at 74 degrees Celsius (165 degrees Fahrenheit) and
ξ then be injected into the airport's heating system.
ξ It will then be pumped back into the ground at a temperature of 45 C (113 F).
ξ "We have the unprecedented luck of having hot water below our feet that can heat a large part of Orly without CO2 [carbon dioxide] emissions.
ξ We are the first airport in Europe to do this,"
ξ Pierre Graff is chairman and managing director of Aeroports de Paris (ADP)
ξ The project, launched after a technical and financial feasibility study, will cost 11 million euros (17.27 million dollars).
ξ The Orly-Ouest terminal, part of Orly-South, the airport's Hilton Hotel, and
ξ two business districts will be hooked up to the system from 2011.
ξ ADP hopes geothermal will meet a third of its heating needs and coincidentally save 7,000 tonnes of its 20,000 tonnes of its annual emissions of CO2,
ξ the principal greenhouse gas.
ξ The neighbouring towns of Orly, located south of Paris, and l'Hay-les-Roses, already use geothermal.

Nice Cote d'Azur International Airport to connect to the Network Manager (NM) using System Wide Information Management (SWIM)

Nice airport is France’s second busiest airport
it will become the first airport in Europe to connect to the Network Manager (NM)
using System Wide Information Management (SWIM) interfaces
exchanging flight plan information and
sending Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) Departure Information Messages (DPI) to the NM
connecting more quickly and cost-effectively with its main partner,
France’s Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) Direction des Services de la Navigation Aerienne (DSNA)

Nice airport has a distributed architecture and
acts as an information broker for distributing relevant data
to the different airport services from a central airport operations database.

To date, most airports and their local ANSPs are exchanging information via the Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN) network,
which is expensive and has its limitations in terms of what can be exchanged.

The Pilot Common Projects Regulation foresees the need to implement SWIM-based interfaces,
which are enablers for new concepts such as the Airport Operations Plan (AOP) and
Network Operations Plan (NOP) integration.
