ξ Alaska, Oregon and Hawaii offer exceptional climatic and geographic diversity,
ξ lightly populated airspace and overwater test opportunities that can support the majority of FAA needs

ξ The Pan-Pacific UAS Test Range Complex offers 13 test ranges, six of which are located in Alaska.
ξ All of the ranges allow for UAS flight after the aircraft passes rigorous evaluations for safety, reliability and usability.
ξ None of the ranges are in or establish new restricted airspace,
ξ but the Pan-Pacific Test Range Complex operators will collaborate with the Alaska National Guard and Alaska Command.
ξ This collaboration will allow for access to restricted airspace for operations that require a greater margin of safety.

Alaska chosen as test site for drone research

ξ news were being welcomed by state political leaders
ξ U.S. Sen. Mark Begich said the initiative to bring jobs, resources and a new mission to the University of Alaska system
ξ and to help lay the foundation for other new economic activity putting the state on the world map when it comes to this exciting emerging technology
ξ Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell, chairman of the Aerospace States Association, said drones to be capable to save lives and to promote scientific research and resource development in Alaska

ξ FAA announced the University of Alaska as one among six test-site operators chosen to research the requirements
ξ necessary to safety integrate drones, or unmanned aircraft systems, into U.S. airspace

ξ The Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration at the University of Alaska Fairbanks will oversee the work
ξ test sites are in Alaska, Hawaii and Oregon

ξ Center founder and director Greg Walker said the Alaska test sites will include work in the Interior
ξ on how to integrate drones in and around airports and at Prudhoe Bay,
ξ on how to safely integrate the technology into an industrial environment
ξ the center is working with Oregon and Hawaii on what officials there want to do with their sites

ξ The proposal involves test sites near Pendleton, Tillamook and in central Oregon, Lt. Col. Alan Gronewold, an Oregon National Guard officer, told The Oregonian.

ξ Walker said his team in Alaska has been far ahead of most of the rest of the country
ξ in studying how drone technology can be used for civilian activities
ξ It has been researching the viability of use of drones for things like oil spill response, wildlife surveys, highway construction and fisheries management

ξ FAA's decisionis seen to open more opportunities to expand the research

ξ The Alaska Legislature previously provided $5 million for drone research and development at the university

ξ State Rep. Shelley Hughes, co-chairing a legislative task force for unmanned aircraft systems,
ξ said the panel has been studying the state's responsibility regarding privacy concerns and
ξ would make recommendations to the Legislature to protect the public.
ξ "Alaska continues to be a leader in aviation, and this is the next wave," she said in a statement.
ξ "It makes sense to use UAS for the dull, dirty, and dangerous tasks."
