KFUPM and Intel inaugurate Energy Competency Laboratory in Saudi Arabia

King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) and Intel Corporation announced the opening of the Energy Competency Laboratory located at KFUPM in Dhahran.

The lab, part of Dhahran Technology Valley, will lay the foundation for a specialized centre in oil, gas and petrochemicals applications and software,
and will receive contributions from a number of specialized companies.

The move aims to reinforce ongoing cooperation between the University and Intel Corporation
as part of Intel's Digital Transformation initiative in the Middle East.

The inauguration took place in the presence of his Excellency Dr. Mohammed Omar Budair, Vice Rector for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research;
and Alaa Abunijem, Strategic Relations Manager for the energy sector for Middle East, Turkey and Africa, at Intel Corporation.

The University has been committed to not only establishing, but extending bridges of cooperation with leading institutions and corporations
for quite some time now," said Dr. Budair.

"Enhancing partnerships with important organizations means that we benefit from international expertise,
enabling us to augment our human resources training and knowledge transfer, localise and tailor advanced technology and
form sophisticated visions that improve the quality of output and levels of scientific and academic qualifications."

The new laboratory will provide the students, academia and researchers with early access to Intel's latest technology.

In the march of development led by the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques,
King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz and his Royal Highness, Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz,
this initiative hopes to increase the contribution of the university and the production of its academic staff and researchers.

Dr. Budair added, "The opening of the lab coincides with the dedication the university has demonstrated
towards the development of the skills of its students, particularly in the field of information technology,
one of the key skills that the Personal Skills Program -
set up by the University as one of the hands-on projects of adopting comprehensive qualifications of students - aims to improve.

The university is keen on improving computer accessibility, employing ICT in the educational process, creating smart-classrooms and
developing the capabilities of its academic staff."

Housed in the university's research centre, the lab will use Intel's latest software and hardware,
including a number of Intel Centrino Duo enabled notebooks for operating systems and software that can benefit from multi-core processing capabilities. In addition, the lab will implement a server system based on Intel Itanium processors for super-computing applications, and an additional server system using the recently released dual-core Intel Xeon 5100 series. The lab will offer significant computing power for students and academic staff alike to run projects and research and development.

According to Dr. Faleh Al Sulaiman, Supervisor for Dhahran Techno-Valley,
Intel's lab forms the beginning of an international centre specialized in petroleum, gas and petrochemicals software.

"The centre, to be set up in cooperation with leading companies specialized in this field,
is to be integrated with the research centres of the international companies at the Dhahran Technology Valley
in order to meet the technical needs in what is a vital sector of our national economy," said Dr. Al-Sulaiman.

"The centre will also serve to localize and further develop the related technologies,
which will help to provide distinguished services for the biggest national corporations,
such as Saudi Aramco, Sabec and many others and we fully appreciate Intel's pioneering role in this field."

The Energy Competency Laboratory will host continuous training on Intel tools and software libraries,
which allow the students to acquire valuable hands-on experience.

The lab will also serve as a platform for each company operating in the energy domain
that is looking to develop, test and optimize solutions utilising Intel technologies.

"KFUPM creates the ideal environment to showcase the capabilities of Intel's leading technologies through the laboratory.
No doubt, the cooperation between the two parties on this project enhances the distinguished academic reputation the University has enjoyed,
and will go a long way to improve its strategic relations with the local industry,"
commented Abunijem, Director of Strategic Relations for the Energy Sector, Intel META.
