Russian business mogul calls on Japan firms to join nuke project
ξ The Russian chief of the world's largest aluminum producer, Rusal, has called on Japanese companies to take part in a project
ξ to build a nuclear power-generating and aluminum-making industrial complex in the Russian Far East
ξ Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska mentioned Hitachi Ltd. as one company he has in mind
ξ Deripaska, 40, is the owner of investment company Basic Element, which has Rusal under its wing
ξ Aluminum production requires huge amounts of electricity
ξ Toshiba Corp. reached a basic agreement with Russian state-run enterprise Atomenergoprom
ξ to consider cooperating in the nuclear energy business
ξ the Russian and Japanese governments are in talks to conclude an agreement to cooperate in expediting the peaceful use of nuclear energy
ξ These latest developments point to the possibility of Japanese companies making further inroads into the Russian nuclear field.
ξ In April 2007, Russian atomic energy agency Rosatom and Rusal signed a memorandum to build a nuclear power-generating and aluminum-smelting complex in the Russian Far East.

ξ and "homogenize" different standards for nuclear technologies and safety as prerequisites for cooperation with Japanese firms

ξ "It's not just a matter of taking your advanced boiling water reactor or boiling water reactor technology.
ξ "And the issue is homogenization of the standards that could be done in a couple of years," he said.
ξ "I do believe that if we really want to see nuclear stations being built in the safest way,
ξ we need to promote the homogenization of standards."
ξ Deripaska, dubbed "the king of the aluminum industry,"
