AREVA and MHI Enlarge Their Cooperation To the Nuclear Fuel Business

ξ AREVA, the world leading group in the nuclear energy field, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), a major player in global nuclear industry,
ξ have decided to enlarge their cooperation to the new area of fuel business.
ξ Anne Lauvergeon, CEO of AREVA, met today with Kazuo Tsukuda and Hideaki Omiya, respectively Chairman and President of MHI, in Tokyo.
ξ Anne Lauvergeon and Kazuo Tsukuda signed a Memorandum Of Understanding to contemplate the establishment of a joint business organization
ξ for supply of PWR, BWR, MOX and Gas Reactor fuels
ξ The implementation of this formation is expected by the end of this year.
ξ The scope of this cooperation agreement will focus on the Japanese market.
ξ According to the MOU, both parties will discuss MHI's potential investment in AREVA's US nuclear fuel fabrication facility.
ξ They noted also that joint development work of their new reactor, ATMEA 1,
ξ has made good progress targeting the completion of its basic design by the end of 2009,
ξ that design review by third parties is planned and that customer visits have already been started by ATMEA.
ξ AREVA and MHI have also decided to work jointly on the South African tender for which AREVA proposed two EPRs,
ξ extending the manufacturing cooperation initiated for the Finnish Olkiluoto 3 EPR.
ξ AREVA CEO Anne Lauvergeon noted,
ξ "Thanks to the good and efficient relationship developed between two companies for many years, and
ξ strengthened in working together to design ATMEA 1,
ξ cooperation in the fuel business is a natural next step to develop our relationship.
ξ I have high expectations on the results that can be achieved by combining the skills and know-how of MHI and AREVA professionals".
ξ MHI President Hideaki Omiya stated,
ξ "MHI supplies nuclear fuel for 23 PWR nuclear power plants constructed by the company.
ξ Introducing AREVA's BWR nuclear fuel technology,
ξ the joint business formation will be supplying fuels for both domestic BWR nuclear power plants and the PWR plants.
ξ By putting together our forces, MHI and AREVA are expecting to deliver high quality fuel to their customers, and

MHI and COMEX NUCLEAIRE Consortium Receives Order from EDF
ξ MHI and COMEX NUCLEAIRE received an order from EDF (Electricite De France S.A.)
ξ to supply six replacement steam generators (RSG) for pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear power plants (NPP) in France
ξ delivery will begin in 2013 and be completed in 2014
ξ within EDF, the project is managed by the Generation Nuclear Engineering Center (CIPN) at Marseilles

ξ in line with its NPP component renewal program is sequentially replacing the existing steam generators (SG) at its PWR NPPs
ξ headquartered in Paris
ξ is the one of the world's largest electricity suppliers
ξ provides electricity to approximately 38.5 million customers in Europe
ξ operates 58 PWRs

»COMEX NUCLEAIRE
ξ provides, traditionally, highly specialized services and maintenance for NPP facilities
ξ within the framework of this contract with MHI, COMEX NUCLEAIRE will provide more particularly:
ξ the engineering and specific studies,
ξ the reconciliation with the French standards and regulations,
ξ the supports for the licensing vis-�-vis the Nuclear Safety Authority,
ξ the surveillance of the French and European subcontractors,
ξ the inland transport of the RSGs,
ξ the on site follow up and surveillance activities during the installation of the RSGs.

RSGs
ξ manufactured at MHI�s Kobe Shipyard and Machinery Works
ξ measure 21 meters in height and weigh roughly 300 tons
ξ their pressure-resistant container, made of low-alloy steel*, houses more than 4,000 heat transfer tubes made of a thermally treated alloy
ξ � inconel TT690**, an advanced material
ξ SGs play a crucial role in PWRs by transferring the thermal energy generated in the reactor vessel to a secondary coolant and
ξ feeding the resulting steam to a turbine system to generate electricity

MHI's sales of NPP equipment
ξ orders for 22 units of its RSGs from overseas, including France, Belgium and the United States
