RUAG completes new research aircraft
ξ RUAG Aerospace in Oberpfaffenhofen (D) is a subsidiary of the RUAG technology group
ξ it completed on December 3, 2007 its work for the conversion of a new Gulfstream G550 to the research aircraft HALO (High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft)
ξ the HALO project was launched in 2005 with the signature of the agreements between Gulfstream and the German Aerospace Center (DLR / Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt)
ξ under these agreements, RUAG Aerospace Services was subcontracted by the Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, Savannah (USA),
ξ with the modification of the series aircraft
ξ during the 20-month modification period the brand-new Gulfstream G550 was converted from its standard business jet configuration
ξ to the state-of-the-art and highly specialized HALO configuration for the DLR atmospheric research activities
ξ the extensive modifications on the Gulfstream G550 done from May 2006 to December 2007 in Oberpfaffenhofen comprised, among others,
ξ different fuselage cutouts,
ξ installation of a nose mast and
ξ a modified tail cone as well as, 2
ξ in the area of the wings, integration of attachment points for external stores (sensor containers and spray tanks)
ξ in order to ensure mission equipment operation,
ξ a separate aircraft electrical supply and an independent line network were added
ξ the RUAG work package also included the mounting of detailed provisions for research equipment installation
ξ even after the modification phase the HALO aircraft will be supported by RUAG Aerospace
ξ for this, the company has been authorized by Gulfstream as a maintenance organization
ξ this example underlines the positive development of the RUAG company in the area of system integration
ξ also, it is an outstanding example of high technology projects at the Oberpfaffenhofen site
ξ the research aircraft HALO adds to the DLR aircraft fleet as from 2008
ξ from summer 2009 the HALO aircraft will take off from the Oberpfaffenhofen airport to undertake research flights around the globe
ξ HALO will then also be used for research flights by a national user consortium
ξ the HALO project originated from a joint proposal of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG) and the DLR
ξ together with the other members of the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren (HGF)
ξ (Helmholtz association of German research centers) as well as
ξ further scientific institutes from the field of atmospheric research in Germany
ξ the HALO aircraft - under the operational responsibility of the DLR as aircraft operator -
ξ will be used primarily for the following main fields of atmospheric research:
ξ Chemicals in and transport of trace substances in the troposphere and lower stratosphere,
ξ ozone destruction in the stratosphere,
ξ integrated investigations of chemicals-climate-biosphere-man interactions,
ξ transports and chemical reactions in convective and turbulent systems,
ξ investigations of sea ice distribution within polar research activities,
ξ exploration of the impact of air traffic on the tropopause region,
ξ earth and remote sensing with special emphasis on carbon cycle
